Phoenix history spurs footnotes
By Ralph Friedman
Several Mail Tribune read- ers have written me to correct what I said about Phoenix.
I am told, kindly but firmly, that “there really are people from Phoenix who know about the camp,” that Camp Baker was named for Edward Dickinson Baker, and that the original name of the settlement was not Gas- town but Gasburg.
First off, let me assure my amiable correspondents that in visits through Phoenix I asked about a couple dozen people the whereabouts of Fort Baker and notasingle one, including people who said they had lived in the town “for years” had heard of the post.
I now humbly acknowledge that there are Phoenix people who know of the fort, and that there is a historical marker (a metal plate on a boulder) about one quarter mile east of the intersection of Camp Baker and Coleman Creek Roads or, as put by another cor- respondent, “west on Camp Baker Road in the 2200 block.” The actual site of the blockhouse
was purportedly 200 yards south of the marker.
The marker, put up by the DAR, states that “Camp Baker” was first established as a “Fort” during the Rogue River Indian Wars and then reactivated at the opening of the Civil War and garrisoned by “the Baker guards of the 1st Oregon Infantry.”
The marker states that“‘Camp Baker” was named in honor of E.D. Baker - killed in the battle of Ball’s Bluff in 1861.
Now enters the researcher, the skeptic. If you have doubts as to whatI mean, please refer to the article I wrote on the tasks and tools of the historian.
When next I come to Phoe- nix I will definitely check out the exact Site of the “Camp Baker” marker. For now I am willing to accept what I have stated above, though my critics gave me three different “precise” locations.
Now we come to the name, so youcan understand why Ihave put quotes around Camp Baker. McArthur’s “Oregon Geographic Names” states that the”camp was established in 1862" and manned in part by the “First Oregon
10
Volunteer Cavalry.” “Oregon: End of the Trail,” assiduously researched, states that “in 1855 a blockhouse called Camp Baker was erected here; manned by 15 men it withstood a siege by the Rogue River Indians.” There is no talk in this book of a fort during the early part of the Civil War. R.N. Preston based his “‘His- torical Oregon” map book on extensive investigation done by WPA researchers in the 1930’s, and came up with “Fort Baker” which stood “1855-56.” Practically all histories of Oregon, including the definitive “History of Oregon” by Charles Henry Carey, make no mention of either Camp Baker or Fort Baker, demonstrating that this was a small, ad hoc post. McArthur states that Camp Baker was named in honor of E.D. Baker. That would be logi- cal, since Baker was killed in 1861, the first Northern officer to die in action in the Civil War. But could the Camp Baker of 1855 have been named for this same man? Edward Dickinson Baker, who in Dlinois had de- feated Abraham Lincoln for the nomination for Congress in 1844, and in 1852 had emigrated to California to advance his politi-
11
cal career, did not move to Ore- gon until 1859.He was known then to some sophisticated Ore- gon politicians, who persuaded him to come here, but absolutely unknown to the vast majority of the state’s populace.
My off-the-cuff guess (sci- entific but rational) is that the blockhouse built in 1855 either had no name or had the name of its farm owner and that the name of Fort Baker was applied when the site was reactivated in 1862.
Now for the original name. Was it Gastown or Gasburg: Newspaper memoirs by oldtim- ers, none of whom was around at the founding, have it as Gasburg. So has McArthur. But I have seen three accounts spelling out the name as Gastown. One of the three is “Oregon, End of the Trail,” as authoritative as any source I have on the subject.
Why was the settlement named Gastown - or Gasburg?
No two accounts I have seen completely agree. Most differ widely. The common belief is that the place was named fora gabby woman who served food at the stage house. A more charm- ing tale is that in the early days the settlement was home to a number of young single men but had only a solitary single woman.

She was sharp and articulate and dominated every conversation, routing her male adversaries in verbal combat. So - well, you know male chauvinism.
Why was the town named Phoenix? Again, there are a numberof versions. The two most common are these: after a fire leveled most of the village, anew town was expected to rise from the ashes, as the phoenix of mythology did, and, the name Phoenix came from an insurance sign that hung in the window of the first postmaster, who was also the town’s insurance agent.
I am grateful for the letters from Phoenix residents. At least the article inspired some folks to start digging into their local his-
tory.

An Update on the Bear Creek Greenway
The Bear Creek Greenway is in transition from land acquisi- tion to full development of facili- ties. Parks staff are working to acquire the twelve small parcels remaining in private ownership between Ashland and Central Point, while the County Planning Commission reviews the draft master plan for the same 22-mile portion of the project. When completed as planned, the Green- way will provide close-to-home recreational opportunities and protection of wildlife habitat.
Those of you using the three- mile recreational trail between Suncrest Road and south Talent Avenue at Hwy. 99 will have noticed that County Parks’ new “flail mower” trimmed the black- berries this spring, so berry pick- ing was especially good in 1988 — in spite of the drought. The berry bushes are not treated with herbicides because we know so many of you like to pick the fruit. The new mower makes it pos- sible to do in a day what has taken weeks of hand work in the past.
The Parks Department has been repairing root damage to the blacktop on the Talent path. We
- Karen Smith
know that there are spots that are bad and have marked the worst areas with fluorescent paint to warn people of the bumps. There are new materials on the market that will greatly reduce the root problem, and future trail construc- tion should not suffer so much from root damage. Cottonwood trees, by the way, are the worst trees along the bicycle path be- cause they love the heat and moisture trapped under the black- top.
Tony Paxton, Talent City Administrator, says that the new vault toilets in Lynn Newbry Park are now completed and open. The Bear Creek Kiwanis Club have completed these much-needed facilities. At a future date there will be the need to construct a unisex-handicapped vault toilet in the Park because the dimen- sions of the present walls are a bit snug for wheelchair access. A special thanks to Lynn Newbry, who generously donated the new walls andcement pad for the vault toilets.
County Park Director Neil Ledward met last spring with the Talent Business Association to
14
discuss the great need for safe bicycle/pedestrian access from downtown to the Greenway Trail. Routes along both Suncrest Road and Valley View Road are being studied.
Keep aneye open for the new, full-color Greenway information brochure. Michael Lee of Laurel Communications created the design and original art for the

brochure and Ram Offsetis doing the printing. It’s a beauty!
For two week last August a college student was on the Talent trail to interview walkers, joggers and bicyclists. If there are any of you who did not get interviewed, but would like to supply your opinions concerning future Greenway facilities development, call Karen Smith at 776-7001.

Southern Oregon Pottery and Supply Company
A Talent success story
When Bill and Bonnie Mor- gan first went into George Davis’ second hand store at 111 Talent Avenue looking for some used building materials, they never dreamed that someday they would havea pottery supply busi- ness of their own in the big old building in the center of town.
In 1975, they moved from Portland when Bill transferred from a social work job at the VA Hospital in Portland to an admin- istrative job at the VA Domicili- ary in White City. Bonnie had been a potter in Portland and set up her studio in their new Ash- land home.
Southern Oregon Pottery and Supply Company (SOPS) was formed in 1978 when Interstate Stone and Block in Medford which carried supplies for pot- ters decided to phase out that portion of their business. Bil] was ready to try a new job and was interested in startin gasmall business. The pottery supply Inventory was purchased from Interstate Stone and a store front
22
in Medford was set up on Barnett Road. A year later the store was moved to the present location in Talent.
SOPS has grown and pros- pered in Talent. They provide supplies and equipment to not only the local pottery commu- nity but toceramists, china paint- ers, mold makers, schools, and institutions in Oregon and North- ern California and beyond. They carry kilns, pottery wheels, glazes, tools, china paints, books, plasters, chemicals, refractory items, and raw and prepared clays. Customers are often de- lighted to see that all the neces- Sary supplies are available lo- cally without having toorderfrom or travel to a big city. A cata- logue promotes many mail order sales to customers outside the immediate area.
They now ship equipment such as kilns and pottery wheels and raw materials for glazes and clay bodies to points all over the nation and occasionally to for- eign countries. Equipment re-
pair is an important service that SOPS also provides.
Another aspect of Southern Oregon Pottery and Supply has been the space used by one or more studio potters. For the last several year Marian Telerski and Claire Barr-Wilson have shared the private studio in the rear of the building. Marian isa produc- tion potter making a full line of utilitarian items such as bowls, vases, mugs, etc. Claire pro- duces one of a kind sculptural pieces (she made the large teapot that was installed this past spring on the top of SOPS). Both women sell their work at local and na- tional galleries.
Bill and Bonnie liked the friendly small town atmosphere they found in Talent nine years ago and have enjoyed being a part of its business community.

You Cam Solve Common Household Cleaning Problems Using Products You Have Around The
House
VINEGAR AS A CLEANER White vinegar will clean appliance exteriors, ceramic tile, and drip cof- fee makers (fill reservoir with vine- gar, and run through the brewing cycle.) Use full strength to clean plastic shower curtains and to clean toilet bowls, tubs and sinks. As a rinse for your hair after shampooing, add to rinse water. As a softener for your laundry, add 1 cup of vinegar during the rinse cycle.
TOILET BOWL CLEANER Use baking soda, Tang, or a can of cola.
SCOURING POWDER Make a paste of baking soda and water, or use Bon Ami brand.
BUGS IN HOUSE PLANTS
Push a clove of fresh garlic into soil. Then as it grows, cut back.
38
LEATHER & WOOD FURNITURE CLEANER Carefully bring 1 cup of linseed oil to a boil, remove from heat, and let cool. Add 1 cup of white vinegar and mix well. Apply with a cloth
ad. ‘ SILVER POLISH Add silverware to 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 quart of warm water, 1 teaspoon salt, and a small piece of aluminum foil. Boil for 3 minutes, let silverware soak for a few min- utes. Rinse and dry well. CARPET CLEANER Sprinkle on salt or dry corn starch. Let set for a while, then vacuum. For grease or drink stains: Sprinkle on salt, then vacuum. Rinse with a solution of vinegar and water. OVEN CLEANER For baked on grease, put a cup of ammonia in the oven and leave over- night. Then scrub with baking soda and water, BRASS, BRONZE, COPPER CLEANER Mix vinegar with salt and flour to make a thick paste. Rub on vigor- ously, then wash and rinse thor- oughly, drying with toweling. Or rub with Worcestershire sauce, on copper use catsup. After polishing these metals, rub with olive oil to keep the shine longer.
RUST SPOTS ON CLOTH Cover with lemon juice and salt, then stretch the area tightly over a pan and pour boiling water through the spot.
MAYONNAISE AS A CLEANER Use it to clean pine pitch off your hands or car, remove grease from your Car, and to remove masking tape that has been left on too long and does not peel off cleanly.

A HOMETOWN HISTORY
Pioneer History 1850 - 1800
The first visitor to Talent, Oregon came long before there was a Talent, Oregon.
He came to the gently slop- ing alluvial floor of the Bear Creek Valley, buthe didn’tcome to stay or to settle, for no trace of him has been found in or around the present city of Talent.
He was, of course, an Indian, probably a Takelma tribesman, or possibly a Shasta Indian, since they both lived in what is now southwestern Oregon.
Why he came can be conjec- tured fairly reasonably. With a creek that was a spawning
ground for anadromous salmon »
and steelhead, and with forested foothills teeming with game of great variety, it would have been Eden to a hunter or fisherman
and the local Indians were both.
46
Just when he came is less reasonable conjecture. Historian Stephen Dow Beckham in his exemplary work called “The Indians of Western Oregon” writes this: “Indians probably lived in westerm Oregon when Romans were building roads and aqueducts in Europe. Indians probably lived in western Ore- gon when Egyptians built pyra- mids along the Nile . Indians may have lived in western Ore- gon when people in the Tigris Valley in western Asia first be- gan planting crops 6,000 years ago.”
Beckham says Shasta Indi- ans lived in the Siskiyous, along the midsection of the Klamath River “and perhaps in part of the Rogue River Valley.”
It is reasonable to believe that a Shasta tribesman or a band of them in a hunting party could have come north into the Bear

But the Takelma Indians occupied the Rogue and Illinois River valleys. They lived closer to the Bear Creek Valley and were more apt to have been that early visitor.
Whichever it was and when- ever it was that the Indians were present at what later became Talent, we know without doubt when the first white man came and who he as.
Talent, like other Rogue Valley towns, grew up around a Donation Land Claim. Federal homesteading laws allowed a
settler to claim 320 acres of land;

a married man could claim 640 acres. The laws also prescribed - required limits of tenancy and spelled out what the settler had to do toretain the land, mainly what kind of improvements he had to make to it. Knowing federal law as we do today, it probably also spelled out what he could not do on it, with it, or to it.
The: rtize of such dimen- sions was an irresistible entice- ment to the young and restless. It was achallenge to the pioneering spirit and optimistic energy of the young men of that day.
One such adventurous pio- neer was named Jacob Wagner,

and when Jacob arrived in 1852 he was the first recorded settler in what was to become Talent Jacob completed his home. stead in 1853 and named his set. tlement, to nobody’s £reat sur- prise, Wagner. A year later a military force, headed bya Cap- tain Alden, came up from Yreka and built a fort on Jacob’s Prop- erty. Also not Surprising, it was named Fort Wagner. It was in- tended to protect the early set- tlers and Passers-through from trouble by Indians. Since there was no Indian trouble, the fort became the center of early day social activities and a place where religious services could be held.
Jacob’s established home- Stead and the structure of the fort Was a signal to others and a Spur to their pioneerin & Spirit, and the influx began in earnest in the autumn of 1853, as more home- Steaders found their way to Wagner.
Incidentally, there is by no means total agreements on the part of historians or students of history on the name of that early settlement.
One historian believes the Settlement’s first name was Wagner Creek Fort. A volume Called “Oregon Geographic

Names’ shows the settlement bearing the name of Wagner Creek. Whatever its name was, whether shrouded in the mists of history of not, there can be no doubt that is was named for its first settler Jacob Wagner, who responded to the call to the American frontiersman and made the dangerous way west from his home in Missouri to a new life in the Oregon Territory.
His name endures in geo- graphical features such as Wag- ner Creek and Wagner butte, and in man made features such as Wagner Creek Road or in busi- nesses which took the Fort Wagner name.
In the autumn and winter of 1853, the immigration grew, mainly through three wagon trains that were the first to follow Jacob into Bear Creek Valley.
One was the Lupton train consisting of 60 wagons, and another was called the Preacher’s Train, because most of its members were.clergymen, their families and followers. A third was the Stearn’s Train, made up of 28 family members.
Others among the first arri- vals to the new and raw settle- ment were John P Walker, D. P. Brittian, Welborn Beeson, John Holton, Samuel Robinson, E. K.

The settlement grew and flourished. The first child, a girl, was bom at Fort Wagner in the winter of °54. The first school- house was built that same yearon the banks of Bear Creek just northeast of town.
The first crops planted were Wheat and oats. The first peach seeds were planted in 1853 and may have been the first peach orchard in Oregon. The first tapes were grown in the Wag- ner Creek area. Walnut trees

were planted about 1859 and are thought to be the first in Jackson County. Water rights were estab- lished by Jacob Wagner and he established the first irrigation system in Oregon. (A _ monu- ment at the corner of Rapp Road and Wagner Creek Road pays tribute to Jacob as Oregon’s first irrigator.)
Wagner (or Talent) began along the old road that ran from Phoenix to Ashland (It’s now Talent Avenue and formerly was called Old Pacific Highway). There was a stage stop on the road, and the Baptist Church was
on this road near Wagner Creek. The old church is the only survi- vor of these early days and was moved from its original site to one at South Main Street back in the 1920's. |
One of the early arrivals to the settlement came in 1875. His name was A. P. Talent. In 1889, he platted a townsite, and you can guess what the new town was
named.

and the little town, like many others in the Rogue Valley, ex- perienced a tremendous surge in growth and activity. It became the supply center for farms in the area, and it was a shipping point on the rail line.
Along with the railroad came commercial development. Ho- tels, restaurants, blacksmith shops, a barber shop, a school and stores were established. The commercial and service activity clustered about the railroad, what is now Talent Ave/ Main and Wagner Streets. Develop- ment also occurred around the

Residential development continued at an increasing pace from those pioneer days until the onset of The Depression,
There are about 21 resi- dences in Talent today that may have been built before 1900, Some of these remaining early houses may have existed as farm houses before the railroad came in 1884 and the original town plat by A.P. Talent in 1889, Most, however, prebably were built after the two events and were located near commercial
activity and transportation routes,

point from the railroad era right into the 20th century. In 1910, when the population reached about 250, an election was held and Talent became an incorpo- rated town.
During this period, consid. erable local attention was being given to the Talent area not only for its fruit raising but also for its market garden products and ber- ries. Incentive was provided for these industries when the Bagley Cannery began Operating in 1912. It may have been Jackson County’s first, and it moved to Ashland in 1924, A fruit packing house Started up about the same time as the cannery.
Furthermore, with the ad- vent of motorized vehicles, around 1910, logging activity increased in the area since before then logging was done with
horses. Access was now permit- ted to areas of the woods that Rallings

couldn’t before be reached. Several small sawmills were built in the Talent area. As in the railroad period, Talent was a center of commerce and activity for the adjacent popula- tion. The commercial develop- ment continued but took a sharp setback in 1911 when a major fire that nearly destroyed all the structures in the area.
The town bounced right back with the construction of Wolter’s Store where Rick’s Market is today. By 1923 Talent had a store, a bank, two hotels, a lumber yard, four churches, three lodges and various other establishments.
Comparatively, Talent was more of a center of commerce during the 1900’s than it is today.
Inthe early days, inter-valley travel was slow. Even with the introduction of the automobile about 1910 and the paving of the

two-lane Old Pacific Highway about 1935, there still was little travel. A good number of busi- nesses were able to locate in Talent within walking distance of each other and the city resi- dents.
However in 1914 there was apparently enough going on with the automobile in Talent to war- rant a speed control ordinance —
limit was 17 miles per hour. Immediately after incorporation in 1910, there were four sub- divisions platted inside the City. Most of the residential develop- ment then took place in the north portion of town along Gibson and Fairview Streets, along
Front and First Streets, north of Main, along and between Wag- ner and Main Streets, west of the railroad tracks, and along Talent Avenue, southwest of Wagner Street. There also was alarge lot subdivision out of town, in the
neighborhood of the Lithia Drive-in, which became par- tially developed.
Talent grew steadily until The Depression hit, and the main railroad service was shifted to Klamath Falls. Talent went from a population of 550 in 1924 to 381 by 1940.
Automobile Age 1940 - 1960
After the depression Talent made a strong comeback. From 1940 to 1950 Talent grew 94% to a population of 739. in 1960, the populations was 868 . Four

subdivisions occurred during this time span. Three were in- side the city, although only one really developed, and one was outside along Meadow Slope Drive.
Four-lane Highway 99 was completed through and outside of Talent in 1953, and the city responded by annexing out to it. With the highway, there was a pull of commercial development out away from the core area to take advantage of the new traffic patterns.
It was probably during this period that commerce in Talent all but stopped and a “bedroom

During this period, the ma- jority of new housing starts oc- curred as a filling in process in the already established residen- tial areas. There was also some development stringing out along Talent Avenue, and in the South Talent area also.

grew from 868 people to 2620, or a301% increase. This growth can be attributed to increased mobility of the population and the liveability of the Rogue Val- ley. The real growth came to the area after completion of Inter- state 5 in 1963.
The number of subdivisions and annexations also helped Talent attract and accommodate people. In 18 years there have been 19 annexations amounting to approximately 392 acres or a tripling of the size of Talent be- fore 1964. There have been 11 subdivisions, 7 mobile home parks, and an additional 716

additional lots and mobile home spaces in Talent. Patio Village added another 64 dwellings units.
Commercial development in the city has not kept pace with residential development. With the automobile still affordable, Talent residents are still mobile and they work and shop in the Valley’s larger cities.
As seen by the number and size of annexations and sub- divisions, residential develop- ment expanded quite extensively during this period. The South Talent annexation of about 238 acres had the largest effect on Talent’s development history during this period. The large amounts of developable lands have opened the door to Subdivisions and mobile home parks,
Besides in the South Talent area, residential expansion took place in the fringes of Talent’s original city limits. Those major expansion areas were along North First, Second, Third and Fourth Streets, Wagner Creek Road, and Talent Avenue be- tween Wagner Creek and Wag- ner Street. Some of the older residential neighborhoods in
Talent also saw some new growth,
